Testing the credibility of using self-testing tampons as a means for HPV screening to detect cervical-associated diseases.

Nadiah Ikhlas, Year 4 Biomedical Sciences

About the research

My research focused on the credibility of using self-testing tampons as a means for HPV screening to detect cervical-associated diseases. The project involved two things: a systematic review, and a technical optimisation study.

In the technical optimisation study we used tampons sponsored by the Daye company to evaluate their performance and sensitivity across different stimulated materials, aiming to detect HPV using the Aptima assay.

What was the highlight?

My favourite part of the project was definitely culturing the SiHa cells, human cervical cancerous cells, to inoculate them onto the tampons during optimisation studies.

Why should students get involved in a summer project?

I highly recommend others to be involved with summer projects as an opportunity to explore research topics in more depth to find out where your interests lie and refine your lab skills. You also get to meet and connect with different people who can offer valuable guidance for your final year project or careers prospects.

Career plans for after you graduate?

I’m still deciding on the career path I would like to pursue in after my 4th year, but I perhaps want to practice in the NHS. I would like to become a clinician scientist or an independent researcher.
