Maialen Martin Abad, Year 4, Neuroscience Tell us about your research The main aim of my project was to explore the vulnerability of myelination of GABAergic interneurons in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, focusing on the CA1 region and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. What were the challenges and highlights? At the beginning, getting used to performing the experiments using the correct techniques was a bit challenging, but this experience taught me that repetition was essential to gain self-confidence in the lab. Asking for help from other lab members was also substantial and showed me that working in a lab is a smooth combination of both independent learning but also teamwork. I really enjoyed this experience and would like to thank everyone who made it possible, specially my supervisor Dr. Jian Gan, and lab members from within and outside the research group who provided me with support and thorough training. How has the experience impacted your career plans? It was very rewarding to have the opportunity to see and experience how a lab works, and how the daily life of a scientific researcher looks and feels like, which solidified my will of going into research after I finish my studies. I would strongly encourage every Biomedical sciences student to try to find a summer internship, as it is very enjoyable and will give you insights on whether you would like to go into research in the future.
