Coding a data analysis pipeline to analyse 2photon calcium images

Marianna Hronska, Year 3 Neuroscience

Tell us about the research

I was involved in two projects. The first project was helping a PhD student to code a data analysis pipeline to analyse 2photon calcium images that she had captured. This involved motion correcting the images, identifying the cells that we were interested in, and extracting their fluorescence.

The second project was with a masters student and was a behavioural experiment where we carried out whisker based somatosensory tests on mice. We were researching whether they could recognise an object they had seen before, and whether they preferred new or familiar objects.

What was the highlight?

I enjoyed getting to work in a lab and getting to know so many MSc and PhD students and getting to know how academia works. It has shaped what I want to do. I had a strong feeling I wanted to do neuroscience and I wanted to try it out this summer to see if it will interest me in practice.

Career plans for after you graduate?

I know now that I would love to do research in neuroscience and help people with neurodevelopmental difficulties.
