Exploring the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of Type 2 diabetes

Laura María Quesada Ojeda, Year 4, Reproductive Biology

Tell us about your research?

In my project, I explored the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of Type 2 diabetes. This research was novel because it used a polygenic mouse model that mimics how type 2 diabetes develops in humans. Initially, I was a bit nervous during the experiments, but soon I adapted to the lab environment.

What was the highlight?

The project gave me a good insight into science and research and showed me how a real scientific lab works.  It has also solidified my passion for pursuing research after completing 4th year. I would like to thank all the team that allowed me to have this experience.

Why should students get involved in a summer research placement?

If you are thinking about getting into research in the future, participating in a summer project gives you an idea of what it will be like and whether it’s something you will enjoy.
