How to be an Academic Families Leader

Being a leader showcases a variety of skills, is really useful on your CV, and can count towards the Edinburgh Award. Find out how to get involved.

The BMTO has a successful peer support scheme, a system of Academic Families, that provides support for all our new entrants run by our year 3/4 students. We aim to make the transition into university as smooth as possible for all our new students and who better to provide invaluable advice than the very group of people who went through the same process just a year or two ago.

Being a leader showcases a variety of skills that future employers will be looking for.

This year we will also be providing an exclusive Player Layer Academic Families top to all leaders.

How much time is involved?

The time commitment is currently:

  • two to three days of training in May or September
  • preparation of a welcome letter
  • a minimum of 5 meetings to be held throughout the year (usually 3 in semester 1 and two in semester 2)
  • help with organising/ attending social events.

However, as we are always reviewing what is best for the new students this commitment could change.

If you like to help people, want to develop or enhance both leadership and team-working skills, and get a chance to network with lots of other honours students then get involved!  Recruitment takes place in semester 2, but in the meantime your can email Allison Wroe if you have any questions or would like to register your interest.
