Satisfactory academic progress

Credit points you'll be expected to gain in each year of study.

Students on the Medical Sciences programme are expected to obtain 120 points in each study year.

Year 1

Students should obtain 120 credits by the end of Year 1.

The minimum number of credit points a student can obtain and make up the credit deficit in the following year is 100 credit points.

Year 2

Students should obtain 240 credit points by the end of Year 2.

The minimum number of credit points a student can obtain and make up the credit deficit in the following year is 220 credit points.

University rules for progression

However, the University rules for progression from year to year of a degree programme (General Undergraduate Degree Regulation 30) state:

“Students must attain the credits and other requirements, e.g. core courses, for each stage of study, as outlined in the relevant Degree Programme Table. In addition, students must meet any other requirements set out in their programme and/or course handbook.  In order to progress, a full-time student must attain the following minimum number of credits (pro-rata for a part-time student):

  • 80 credit points by the end of year 1
  • 200 credit points by the end of year 2
  • 360 credit points by the end of year 3
  • 480 credit points by the end of year 4.”

If, at the relevant stage you have not obtained the required credit points, your academic progress will be unsatisfactory and you may be required to suspend studies until you have made good the deficit either by taking resit exams or additional courses, possibly by part-time study.

Deficit in credit points

If you end your first or second year of the Medical Sciences degree programmes with a deficit of 40 credit points (i.e. with 80 or 200 credit points), our experience is that successfully making up this deficit in the following year is very difficult. At this stage it is extremely demanding to study for 160 credit points worth of courses and still obtain sufficiently high marks in your second year to guarantee progression to the Honours year or in third year courses to get back on track for a good Honours degree classification.

It is the policy of the BMTO that students finding themselves in these circumstances will have to extend their period of study so that the lost ground can be made up prior to embarking on the next year of study.
