Could you briefly introduce yourself and your summer research project?

Hi, this is Tianhui! I’m a Neuroscience student about to begin my senior year. This summer, I investigated innate defensive behaviours in response to ecologically relevant aerial stimuli using the Nlgn3-/y rat model, an animal model of neurodevelopmental disorders associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  The focus of this project is on the innate, unlearned defensive responses of the rat model because traditional approaches to studying fear behaviour, such as the conditioned threat paradigm, may not fully reflect how animals respond in real-life situations. However, examining innate defensive responses to naturalistic predator-mimicking stimuli allows us to investigate the hardwired survival mechanisms in these genetically modified rat models within a context that closely simulates a real environment.

Which funding did you receive for your research, and how did you get it?

My summer research placement was supported through funding provided by BMTO. I applied for this vacation scholarship by submitting a form outlining an overview of the project and my research interests.

What was the most rewarding part of your summer research?

The most rewarding part was having the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with behavioural testing and to develop technical skills using professional software in an immersive lab setting, while also gaining valuable insight into the qualities and mindsets required in scientific research which fostered my academic and personal growth.

Why should students get involved in a summer research project?

This is such an incredible experience to gain knowledge and explore one’s passion, engage directly with scientific research and discover not only new scientific insights but also a personal journey of growth and development.

How has this research experience influenced your future study and career paths?

It shapes my understanding of the responsibilities and commitments as a researcher, strengthens my passion and points me toward a clearer path I wish to pursue.

What advice would you give future students applying for summer research scholarships?

Always stay optimistic and prepared, and don’t panic if you ever feel lost or uncertain. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your curiosity and passion will guide you throughout your journey and help you navigate challenges.
