Could you briefly introduce yourself and your summer research project?

Hi! I am Pankhudi, a year 4 BSc Medical Sciences student at the BMTO. Over the summer of my third year, I completed a six week summer research internship at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer. I worked within Professor Simon Wilkinson’s research group, which focuses on autophagy in tissue homeostasis and cancer. Pancreatic cancer is diagnosed too late for curative treatment, progresses rapidly, and has poor survival outcomes. My project addressed these challenges by focusing on precancerous lesions. Spatial biology data from the lab identified changes in immune presentation and inflammatory signalling in lesion- tissue. My project aimed to validate key biomarkers and how immune signalling and inflammation shape the early tumour microenvironment. Confirming these molecular changes will help test whether targeting these pathways could prevent progression to invasive cancer.

What was the most rewarding part of your summer research?

Contributing to cancer research was meaningful and incredibly rewarding, particularly given the complex nature of cancer. This experience gave me valuable insights into lab research and helped me better appreciate the trial-and-error process inherent to science.

Why should students get involved in a summer research project?

During this experience, I had the opportunity to network with PhD students and postdocs across departments. I gained valuable hands-on wet lab experience, allowing me to apply the knowledge from my university courses to lab sessions.  I also had the chance to have meaningful conversations with researchers to gain a better understanding of life in academia.

How has this research experience influenced your future study and career paths?

My internship helped me better understand academia and raised my interest in translational science and cancer biology. Moving forward, I hope to complete a master's degree in drug discovery and pharmaceutical sciences.

What advice would you give future students applying for summer research scholarships?

Definitely apply early by reaching out to professors at the beginning of the year and be sure to apply to lab groups you are passionate about. Always take the time to review their work. Do not be disheartened if some do not reply, stay persistent and always keep a reflective journal throughout your tenure!
