Bistra Dimovska presents a summer research project on glucocorticoid receptor signalling in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney and circadian blood pressure control.

Could you briefly introduce yourself and your summer research project?

Hi! My name is Bistra Dimovska, I am a 4th-year Biomedical Sciences Student. My summer research project focused on glucocorticoid receptor signalling in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney and circadian blood pressure control.

Which funding did you receive for your research, and how did you get it?

I received funding through the BMTO by applying to the summer research project scholarship they offer to students completing a summer project.

What was the most rewarding part of your summer research?

The most rewarding part of my summer research was definitely having to meet and interact with many individuals across academia and within the Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences. Apart from my supervisor, I received help and guidance from various researchers across the centre while at the same time gaining valuable skills in data analytics and various laboratory techniques. These interactions allowed me to discover more and learn more scientific, medical and analytical concepts beyond my summer project which I think is always an amazing opportunity!

Why should students get involved in a summer research project?

Because you will begin to understand what truly interests you, and this type of experience will allow you to either confirm or re-direct your interests within the biomedical sciences and research. You will gain a myriad of skills and knowledge, as well as become a part of a community where you can expand your network within academia.

How has this research experience influenced your future study and career paths?

This research helped me understand that data analysis and R programming are certainly within my area of interest, which further allowed me to redefine my interests for future career paths and future study. It further solidified my interest in biomedical and specifically cardiovascular research.

What advice would you give future students applying for summer research scholarships?

That they should not be afraid to ask professors if they are offering any summer projects, even if they receive rejections, there will always be someone willing to help! And to always keep an open mind, as they will never know what new knowledge and skills they might gain along the way.
