The Biomedical Sciences Learning and Teaching Forum 2017 was held on the 21st of June in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre at the Biomedical Teaching Organisation.

This first forum was a great success with over 60 staff and PhD students gathering to celebrate Learning, Teaching and Student support at the Deanery of Biomedical Sciences.
The event consisted of series of stimulating and interesting presentations covering a range of recent initiatives in student support, teaching, curriculum development and research in Teaching and Learning.
Topics included:
The student learning journey
Delivering a Biomedical Sciences UG programme in China
The Academic Families peer support scheme
Recent initiatives in Anatomy
Teaching and Learning with massive online open courses (MOOCs)
Building competence in social sciences for medical sciences students
The power of placements for science communication
Mentorship scheme for Career development PhD students in Learning and Teaching
The wonderful diversity of good practice on display revealed the true strength and depth of scholarship and research that underlies the development and implementation of learning and teaching- and student support-related initiatives in our Deanery. The Learning and Teaching forum was a celebration of the endeavour, imagination and expertise of staff within Biomedical Sciences. Contributions from outside our Deanery by Fiona Hale (IS), Hazel Marzetti and Neil Lent (IAD) provided an invaluable wider perspective on how we can work with other initiatives to further enhance our learning and teaching activities. Impact here has been rapid with at least two approaches from within the Deanery to engage with ELDeR course/programme review. The lesson has been learned – this will be an annual event from now on!
Philip Larkman
Director of Teaching, Biomedical Sciences
Following a staff meeting discussion led by Prof Mike Shipston, Dean of BMS and Dr Phil Larkman, Director of Teaching, two guest presentations ended the day:
“ELDeR: learning design in practice” by Fiona Hale (Information Services) and “LEAF in Medical Sciences” by Hazel Marzetti (Institute for Academic development).
