The Biomedical Sciences Opportunities Committee (BSOC) aims to improve working conditions for employees, and ensure good equality and diversity practice. The BSOC also acts as our Athena SWAN self-assessment team, to ensure that we fulfil the objectives in our current Athena SWAN award, so that Athena SWAN principles become integral to overall strategy within Biomedical Sciences. Following Athena SWAN guidelines, the BSOC includes representation from women and men at different stages of their academic careers, from PhD students through to Professors, and across Biomedical Sciences’ various Research Centres. We work towards broader engagement of staff and students, soliciting responses and ideas on how to improve strategy on a wide range of topics, including, amongst others: the appraisal system; career development; training; dissemination of information about working conditions (such as flexible working); mentoring schemes; good practise across the recruitment process.
