This is a major new initiative between the University of Edinburgh and the NHS Scotland Deanery, allowing all core surgical trainees in Scotland to review the surgical anatomy of the whole body to MRCS level during their early years training. The programme forms part of the wider Improving Surgical Training (IST) strategy established in 2018, which aims to rebalance training by better addressing the needs of both patients and service providers. The core training programme is included in our surgical anatomy portfolio (Edinburgh Surgical Anatomy Series) which provides blended anatomy/surgery courses for both core and higher surgical trainees in Scotland.

The outcomes of the first 2 years of the programme were recently presented at the International Virtual Anatomy Conference (IVACON 2021; India) on the subject of ‘Contemporary and Evolving Perspectives in Anatomy Education’.
