Biography

Dr. Abduelmenem Alashkham, MBBS, MSc, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy at the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh. He completed his medical degree at the University of Zawia, Libya, and initially practised as an orthopaedic surgeon before moving to the UK. In 2010, Dr. Alashkham obtained an MSc in Human Anatomy with distinction, followed by a PhD from the University of Dundee.

Dr Alashkham currently serves as the Programme Director for the MSc Human and Clinical Anatomy programmes and teaches anatomy across various degree courses. In addition, he supervises MSc and PhD students, guiding research in anatomy and related fields.

Dr. Alashkham is the author of the textbook Anatomy and Physiology for Paramedical Practice, published by Elsevier in 2023. His scholarly output comprises more than 100 publications, encompassing manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters, with a primary focus on the musculoskeletal system and cancer. His research has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Anatomy, Clinical Anatomy, European Urology Supplements and the Prostate.

In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Alashkham acts internationally as an external consultant for the College of Medicine at the University of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he contributes to reviewing and developing the anatomy curriculum and supports the introduction of a new Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. This consultancy aims to align their medical education with global standards and innovative teaching practices.

He also serves as a general reviewer for several editions of Grant’s Dissector, Grant’s Atlas of Anatomy, and Snell's Neuroanatomy. Additionally, Dr. Alashkham is a peer reviewer for a range of prestigious journals, including The Prostate, Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology, Journal of Anatomy, Clinical Anatomy, Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, European Journal of Anatomy, Cureus Journal of Medical Science, Journal of Men's Health, Anatomy: Turkish Society of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy (TSACA), and the International Journal of Surgery.

Teaching Overview

Dr. Abduelmenem Alashkham is responsible for teaching and coordinating anatomy education across multiple programmes at the University of Edinburgh, including the MBChB, HCP-MBChB, and MSc Human and Clinical Anatomy courses, where he also serves as Programme Director. He supervises both MSc and PhD students, guiding research projects primarily focused on musculoskeletal anatomy and clinical applications. Dr. Alashkham has played a key role in curriculum development, integrating modern teaching methodologies and clinical relevance into anatomy education. Beyond the university, he actively contributes as an external consultant for anatomy curriculum development and leads workshops that bridge anatomical science with medical practice.

Research Overview

Dr. Alashkham’s research focuses extensively on human musculoskeletal anatomy, neurovascular mapping and clinical anatomical variations, with an emphasis on improving surgical outcomes and medical education. His work spans detailed cadaveric studies, morphometric analyses and investigations into anatomical variations relevant to orthopaedics and oncology. Dr. Alashkham has published over 40 manuscripts and numerous abstracts in leading journals. He also contributes as a reviewer for multiple high-impact journals, helping to maintain rigorous scientific standards. His research underpins both academic knowledge and clinical practice, aiming to enhance patient care through better anatomical understanding.
