Anatomy@Edinburgh Workshop SeriesAnatomy@Edinburgh aim to provide opportunities for members of the public, and anatomically-interested professionals, to learn more about the human body through a series of formal anatomy workshops, tutorials, and events. These workshops give those outside of ‘traditional’ anatomy stakeholders a chance to learn about their body, to deepen their knowledge and gain unique, exciting learning opportunities.These workshops have been redeveloped and re-aligned to begin anew in 2025. Read on below to hear about the opportunities for members of the public, and professional delegates.Who are these workshops aimed at?There are two Workshop formats which are available to book, depending on your interest, areas of employment, and experience of anatomy. You will find details below on each workshop type. Edinburgh Public Anatomy WorkshopsDo you want to learn more about the study of anatomy, the intricacies of the human body, and how we can apply our knowledge of human anatomy in a broad range of scientific disciplines? The Edinburgh Public Anatomy Workshops may be for you!The Edinburgh Public Anatomy Workshops are the spiritual successors to our traditional anatomy workshops.These fascinating one-day themed workshops will focus on specific areas of anatomy knowledge or research, exploring the human body and the different ways we can use our knowledge to enhance our understanding of the world around us. Each workshop will take place in our historic Old Medical School in Edinburgh on Saturdays throughout the year.Each workshop will include a private visit to explore the historic Anatomical Museum, with refreshments and lunch provided in the anatomy reception space.No prior knowledge is required to participate and enjoy these workshops, and all are welcome to apply.Please note the Public Anatomy Workshops do not utilise contemporary donated human remains. These workshops will include historic human remains and skeletons in the Anatomical Museum, alongside teaching models, digital tools, and other engaging resources. Public Anatomy Workshop Dates Three themed Public Workshops are currently available, between 5th April and 7th June. Full details and a link to the application form will be available shortly.Saturday 5th April: Athletic Anatomy with Sameer DhumaleThis workshop will take participants on a journey to visualise the complex network of musculoskeletal actions that bring about human movement. We will examine how these structures – and our bodies – adapt and change when considering the highest levels of human performance.Saturday 10th May: Building Body Parts with Dr Jennifer PaxtonDelve into the fascinating world of tissue engineering as we explore cutting edge developments in biomedical, anatomical and bioengineering knowledge and technologies. Taking a hands-on, problem-solving approach, you will learn how we develop techniques and processes to replace human tissues from the initial medical problem, through research and development, to a practical, applicable solution.Saturday 7th June: Comparative Anatomy with Victoria McCulloch (Postponed from 1st March)This workshop will explore the fascinating similarities and differences between the human body and our fellow mammals using the historic zoological collection held in the Anatomical Museum. Discover just a small portion of the variation that exists across species, with an emphasis on functional adaptations to changing environments. Public Anatomy Workshop Fees The fee for each Public Workshop is £100 per attendee, with a discounted rate available for groups of 5 or more attendees paying together. Due to the nature of these workshops, attendees must be 16 years or older to participate.The workshop fee includes a delegate welcome pack, any learning resources needed for the session, a light lunch, and refreshments through the day. Participants will also receive a certificate of completion following each workshop. Public Anatomy Workshop Venue Details Arrival and registration for each workshop takes place between 09:30 – 10:00.All workshop activities take place within the Old Medical School, Doorway 3 Teviot Place, Edinburgh, EH8 9AG. All relevant building floors are fully accessible via lifts and ramps. Would a deeper knowledge of the human body help you to practice more confidently, or more safely? The Edinburgh Professional Development Workshops may be the opportunity you have been looking for.The Professional Development Workshops are designed to support working professionals who’s daily tasks would benefit from an increased knowledge of anatomy, or for anatomy revision. This includes allied health professionals, movement practitioners, nursing staff, and all others with a clear professional need for anatomical learning.The Professional Development Workshops will be held as a series of evening activities, combining short revision lectures with hands-on practical learning in our Anatomy Teaching facilities. This will include the exploration of donated human tissues, models, and digital resources under the guidance of our expert team of anatomists to help develop functional and spatial knowledge.The Professional Development Workshops will be small-group learning experiences aimed at individuals with pre-existing anatomical knowledge, allowing for high-yield, detailed anatomical explorations. The Musculoskeletal System This workshop series will take place over four evenings to allow participants to explore the muscular and skeletal systems in a high level of detail, with emphasis on the anatomy of the limbs and backs.All sessions will be held in the Anatomy department in Edinburgh City Centre from 1800 – 2100. The following evenings will be included in the workshop:16th April 2025 - An Introduction to Musculoskeletal Anatomy23rd April 2025 - Anatomy of the Upper Limb7th May 2025 - Anatomy of the Back14th May 2025 - Anatomy of the Lower LimbEach evening will give delegates an opportunity to examine real, practical anatomy, with an integrated exploration of the bones, muscle groups, vasculature, and nerves responsible for each areas’ function. Guidance and support will be provided by expert anatomists throughout each evening combining, where appropriate, both oral presentations and practical demonstrations. Professional Development Workshop Fees The Musculoskeletal Workshop Series is charged at a rate of £350 per participant.This includes a welcome pack and attendance at all four workshops, access to workshop learning materials (as appropriate) and all personal protective equipment and tools necessary for the session will be provided by the department. A certificate of attendance and/or completion will be provided to all participants.
