Vedda Repatriation Ceremony

The ceremony marked the return and repatriation of historical skeletal remains of nine Vedda individuals to the Vedda of Sri Lanka.

Chief Wanniya Uruwarige represented the Vedda at the ceremony in the Playfair Library this afternoon, attended by Peter Mathieson, Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Tom Gillingwater, Professor of Anatomy, Ruth Pollitt and Malcolm MacCalum of the Anatomical Museum, and Anatomy staff .

The Vedda are an indigenous group, who are thought to be the earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka. The skeletal remains have been repatriated following a unique research collaboration between the Vedda, the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and the Anatomists at the university of Edinburgh.
