The Hand Detectives – BBC Radio 4

Dr Stephen Maclean, a Lecturer in Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh, is set to appear in an upcoming BBC Radio 4 Documentary discussing the emerging science of ‘Forensic Hand Identification’.

A 30-minute documentary examining a fascinating new evidentiary resource in the forensic scientist’s toolkit is set to air in October. Focusing on the work of Professor Dame Sue Black, renowned forensic anthropologist and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engagement at the University of Lancaster, it will examine how the human hand can be used to aid in the identification of criminals, including child abusers, through a detailed examination of the anatomy of the hand.

Speaking from the historic Anatomical Museum at the University of Edinburgh, Stephen describes our current understanding of hand anatomy and how this may influence its use in human identification.

The documentary will first air on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday 22ndOctober at 11am, and will be available to listen to via the BBC Radio 4 website and BBC Sounds app.
