Unsuccessful applicants

If your application to study at the University of Edinburgh has been unsuccessful we hope that the following will help you understand the reasons why this decision has been reached.

The most common reasons for an unsuccessful decision are listed below. If you feel that none of these reasons apply to you, then please feel free to write to us and we will provide further detailed feedback.

You thought you were qualified but have been told that you were unqualified.

Those candidates who do not meet, or are not predicted to meet, the subject specific entry requirements for Medicine cannot, unfortunately, be considered for a place. For further information, please follow the link below:

Entry requirements and how to apply

You are taking resits.Candidates resitting one or more qualifications will normally be expected to achieve a grade higher in each qualification than for a first sitting to obtain the same score in the selection process. Thus, an “A” obtained in a resit will score the same as a “B” obtained at a first sitting.
You applied after 15 January.Due to the extremely high demand for places it is only in the most exceptional of circumstances that we will consider a late application. The deadline date for applications is 15 January.
You have not provided an academic reference. It is essential that your UCAS reference is written by someone who knows you in an academic context.
You have not disclosed all relevant information. Our decisions are based on the information you have provided in your UCAS application plus any supplementary information that has been requested by us to support your application. It is essential that in your UCAS application you provide details of all qualifications you currently hold and predictions for all exams that have yet to be taken. We also cannot consider applications without an academic reference as outlined above. Without this information we are unable to take your application further.
You have started a degree course but are not in your final year.We expect those who undertake degree programmes to complete them and therefore cannot consider applications from those who are not in the final year of their degree.
You are qualified but competition is incredibly intense.Competition for places on our Biomedical related courses is extremely high. All applications that meet our academic requirements are assessed on both academic and non-academic qualities. Your personal statement must show motivation to study your chosen degree programme. Evidence that the course choice is informed is obtained either through recognition of the importance of biomedical science and/or medical research to the healthcare professions and/or relevant work experience (which varies depending on the nature of the programme). The limited number of places available are offered to the highest scoring candidates.
Your most recent qualification was taken more than three years agoIf you do not have recent academic qualifications then unfortunately we are unable to consider your application further. Entrance qualifications must have been achieved within the three years prior to the proposed start date at University.
