New publication: The Wade Programme in Surgical Anatomy

Anatomy@Edinburgh has been a long-standing supporter of the Wade Programme in Surgical Anatomy, an internationally recognized program of professional courses run by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd).

A new article describing the Wade Educational Approach and the outcomes of the first 10 years of the program has just been published online in the journal Current Problems in Surgery (open access: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0011384024002028).

Established in 2012, the Wade Programme aims to support the study of surgical anatomy throughout training, from undergraduate level to consultant practice. To date, over 100 courses have been attended by over 1000 delegates from across the globe, and Anatomy@Edinburgh is proud to have hosted a number of the MRCS-level surgical anatomy study days (‘Wade Days’) in collaboration with the RCSEd.

The Wade Programme also provided a model framework for the anatomy component of the national Core Surgical Training (CST) programme, delivered in collaboration with the Scotland Deanery (NHS Education for Scotland). Established in 2018, as part of the UK wide Improving Surgical Training (IST) pilot, these monthly training days provide hands-on practical teaching in surgical anatomy as an integral part of surgical training, and offer a complementary approach to the Wade methodology.

Looking to the future, we hope that the continued success of both programmes can provide a foundation for further collaborative work between the University, the Scotland Deanery and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, to meet the training needs of the next generation of clinicians.
