MSc anatomy students showcase cadaveric research at international conferences

A group of MSc anatomy students, under the supervision of Abduelmenem Alashkham, successfully had their research abstracts accepted and presented at prestigious conferences, including the Anatomical Society Winter Meeting and the Clinical Anatomist Winter Meeting.

Their studies focused on anatomical variations in the upper limb and thoracic region, with important clinical implications for hand surgery, nerve compression and vascular anatomy.

Highlights include:

  • Monisha Tarini Premkumar, Aliya Bhabha, Siobhan Downey, Maria Gavrila, Olwen Smith, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Distal multi-insertion variant of the Gantzer muscle and its potential impact on nerve compression.
  • Abdelhadi Murhaf, Mohammadali Saiyad, Ben Carroll, Humayun Humayun, Hassan AlDarweesh, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Fenestration of the axillary vein with high bifurcation of the axillary artery.
  • Siobhan Downey, Maria Gavrila, Monisha Tarini Premkumar, Olwen Smith, Aliya Bhabha, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Anastomosis of terminal branches in the brachial plexus – a cadaveric case study.
  • Maia Finkelstein Fell, Aaditya Gurjer, Áine Cleary, Mila Fafinska, Emma Shaw, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Dual Palmaris Longus muscles and implications for compressive neuropathies.
  • Maria Gavrila, Monisha Tarini Premkumar, Siobhan Downey, Olwen Smith, Aliya Bhabha, Abduelmenem Alashkham: An additional head of the Adductor Magnus – anatomical variation.
  • Jamal Gnieber, Prathamesh Shinde, Waddah Ahmed, Zabihullah Oryakhil, Alaa Farsi, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Accessory superficial flexor muscle medial to Palmaris Longus – incidence and clinical considerations.
  • Mila Fafinska, Áine Cleary, Maia Finkelstein Fell, Aaditya Gurjer, Emma Shaw, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Coracobrachialis variation resembling the ligament of Struthers.
  • Hassan AlDarweesh, Abdelhadi Murhaf, Mohammadali Saiyad, Ben Carroll, Humayun Humayun, Abduelmenem Alashkham: Distal accessory belly of the Palmaris Longus muscle and its clinical significance.

These presentations reflect the students’ dedication to exploring anatomical diversity and its relevance in surgical practice, advancing both educational and clinical understanding of human anatomy.
