Former MSc anatomy students identify rare sciatic nerve variation

A team of former MSc Anatomy students Rasyidah Rehir, Jun Mun Teoh, Sumar Chan, Raghad Abdulaziz Almansour and Abeer Saleh Alshaya, under the supervision of Abduelmenem Alashkham, have published an exploratory study in Frontiers in Neurology documenting the Type B variation of the sciatic nerve.

Their research, conducted on cadavers from the University of Edinburgh, revealed that 8.3% of the specimens exhibited early bifurcation of the sciatic nerve, where the common fibular nerve pierces the piriformis muscle while the tibial nerve passes beneath it. The study highlights the clinical importance of recognising such anatomical variations to help prevent injuries during surgical procedures such as total hip arthroplasty and during sciatic nerve blocks. The research adds valuable data to the existing knowledge of anatomical variations, particularly within the Scottish population.
