Anatomical Society Funded Research Placement Begins!

Year 3 Biomedical Sciences student Ellie Horne has joined the Anatomy@Edinburgh team for an 8-week research placement, funded by the Anatomical Society.

Ellie’s research title, ‘Forensic Analysis of the Human Clavicle: Evaluating the accuracy of structured light scanning in a forensic context’ will involve creating 3D digital models of human bones using hand-held 3D scanners, and testing their similarity and accuracy against the original bones. This will help us to understand the potential benefits and limitations of this type of technology when investigating criminal cases.

The project is supervised by Dr Stephen Maclean, Lecturer in Anatomy, and will form an important facet of his growing research portfolio looking at the application of light scanning technology in forensic anthropology.

Ellie’s research is generously funded by the Anatomical Society’s Undergraduate Summer Vacation Research Scholarships, through a competitive application process. You can view Ellie’s project resume on the Anatomical Society website. The results of this research will be published by the Anatomical Society, and will also be presented at a future meeting of the Anatomical Society.

The research will take place within the ATLAS Facility, which is led by Dr Jennifer Paxton, Senior Lecturer in Anatomy.
