The University of Edinburgh's Anatomical Museum opened in 1884 and still forms an integral part of the ‘Old Medical School’ designed by Robert Rowan Anderson. The museum has one of the largest and best preserved collections of anatomy in Scotland, as well as the skeleton of the serial killer William Burke. The specimens and preparations on display have helped to teach anatomy to students for 300 years.

The collection of the Anatomical Museum consists of approximately 12,000 objects.

About one third of the museum’s collection is related to pathology, anatomy and comparative anatomy (zoology). The rest of the collection includes phrenological, pharmacological and forensic material as well as anatomical illustrations and other artworks.

Repatriations

The University has a long history of repatriating remains and items from its collection and works with communities around the world to engage with its collections.
