ZJE Research Community and Students to Engage with Leading Cancer Biologist

Students and researchers at the Zhejiang University–University of Edinburgh Institute (ZJE) will have the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge biomedical research when Professor Gen-Sheng Feng delivers the next Biomed-X Research Seminar (No.145) in the institute’s Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series.

The Biomed-X Research Seminar Series plays an important role in strengthening the intellectual life of the institute by connecting ZJE’s growing research community with internationally recognised scholars and providing students with direct exposure to current advances in biomedical science.

Mechanistic Dissection and Immunotherapy of Liver Cancer

Professor Feng will introduce students and researchers to the latest discoveries in the molecular mechanisms that drive liver cancer. The seminar will explore how fundamental biological research is helping scientists better understand the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and opening new pathways for earlier detection and treatment.

A key focus of the lecture will be how interactions between cancer cells and the immune system influence tumour development. Professor Feng will discuss how his research group is identifying new targets for intervention and developing innovative immunotherapy strategies, including approaches that utilise nanotechnology to improve the precision of treatment.

The talk will also highlight emerging research on a newly identified vesicle involved in direct cell-to-cell communication, which Professor Feng has termed the “intercellsome.” Understanding these signalling mechanisms may offer important clues to how cancers grow and evade immune responses.

Short Biography

Professor Feng is Director and Senior Investigator at the Cancer Research Institute, Shenzhen Bay Laboratory. He earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from Indiana University and completed postdoctoral research at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital. He later served on the faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Sanford Burnham Medical Discovery Institute, before joining the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 2009. In August 2025 he joined Shenzhen Bay Laboratory full-time as Director of the Institute of Cancer Research.

An elected AAAS Fellow, Professor Feng has received numerous honours, including the Achievement Award from the Chinese American Diabetes Association, and serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for several leading journals including NatureNature Cell BiologyJournal of Biological ChemistryMolecular and Cellular Biology, and Hepatology.
