Congratulations to our ZJE Executive Dean, Professor Susan Welburn, on her recent award for Outstanding PhD Supervisor. Prof Welburn receiving her award I am delighted that one the many roles I take within the ZJE institute includes direct supervision of international students. We have attracted a cohort of young people from Sub-Saharan Africa who are doing innovative work within neglected tropical diseases. Meeting with these students always seem like a privilege. Professor Sue Welburn OBE ZJE Executive Dean A photo of Prof Sue Welburn OBE speaking at the supervisor award event. In her acceptance speech Sue said: I often describe the supervisor as a compass. A compass does not choose the destination, nor does it walk the journey. But in moments of doubt - when experiments fail, when results are unclear, when confidence falters - it provides direction. Guidance is not only about helping students complete a degree, but about helping them see the purpose and impact of what they do. She continued: Leadership in postgraduate supervision is not about authority, but about empowerment. International students bring diverse perspectives, creativity, and determination. They do not simply learn from us - we learn from them. A strong supervisor recognizes this and creates an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and capable of contributing. This support is unconditional and unwavering. This has transformed lives in some of the world’s poorest and most underserved communities. Through her work in One Health, she has shown that biomedical research is not confined to laboratories. However perhaps her greatest legacy will be a network of over 65 PhD students working to transform health and wellbeing outcomes. The fact that she has been singled out as an outstanding supervisors will come as no surprise to anyone who knows her - or has encountered the scientists she has supervised. View media transcript Professor Welburn she's a very wonderful professor. Like she motivates us in a very different way, mentally, physically, emotionally. And one most important thing is Professor Welburn. He research interest focuses on the zoonotic disease and tropical infectious disease, which is my research interest. That's what the major reason that I joined her lab, and luckily, I became her student, and throughout my two years journey, she's helping me a lot. And I will look forward to go with her until my graduation and goes on. Seeing a woman looking a Woman Professor by itself is another way of inspiration for me, basically. Like, she's a symbol for me. Like a woman can achieve everything that she wants or that's in her dreams. And she's helpful and she knows the struggles and the challenge as being a woman and like the one who strives to achieve dreams. So really, it's very inspiring to be her student and she to be our PI, my PI, basically. Supervisor. Having a woman as my supervisor to me, I would take it as an opportunity because she truly understands your needs as a woman, as a student, as a mother. But also, this is a person that is highly respected. We respect her. Though we don't fear her, we only respect her because she's very approachable. She's a person that you would not fear to tell what's working out and what's not working out, but with respect. So we really look upon her as a role model. She inspires us to do more and more. Professor Olbum is an amazing professor, and I feel excited, and I feel privileged, actually, to be part of her research group. She's somebody who listens, guides, and wants to see someone progress, she never wants to see someone who is lagging behind. So she always keeps following up on her students. So it's really an amazing thing to work with a professor who is of that calibre. So she's she listens and she guides well in everything. She's somebody who has been in Uganda before and knows the country, and she has vast experience in these tropical illnesses. So she really guides you here in a good way with experience.
