Congratulations to our rising researcher in antiviral science. Christiane Cladrowa is shortlisted for the Microbiology Society’s prestigious Early Career Microbiologist of the Year competition. The award recognizes excellence in scientific research communication. The nomination follows a standout presentation at the society’s annual conference in Belfast. Her talk, “Exploring the Antiviral Potential of Bat Antimicrobial Peptides,” drew recognition from the judging panel for its scientific originality and potential global relevance. Christiane’s research in the Sloan Lab, based at the Institute for Regeneration and Repair, explores how naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides found in bats could contribute to future antiviral strategies. This is an area of growing international interest as scientists continue to search for novel approaches to combat emerging viral threats. Christiane’s nomination for the Early Career Microbiologist of the Year final is well deserved. This achievement reflects her talent, dedication, and scientific ambition. It also speaks to the strength of the international research environment fostered within the ZJE transnational education programme. Through world-class teaching, collaborative research, and global academic engagement, we support students like Christiane to tackle some of the most important scientific challenges facing society today. Prof Sue Welburn Executive Dean, ZJE Institute The competition is regarded as one of the society’s premier platforms for emerging scientific talent, spotlighting early-career researchers whose work is shaping the future of microbiology and infectious disease research.Finalists are invited to compete at the society’s headquarters in central London on 13 October 2026, where leading members of the organization’s committees will convene to evaluate the shortlisted presentations.Congratulations Christiane, and good luck at the final!
