The ATLAS Facility welcomes SSERC students for summer placements

During July 2026, anatomy staff provided high school students the opportunity to visit The ATLAS Facility to carry out short research projects based around anatomy engagement tools. These placements were funded by the Scottish Schools Education Research Centre (SSERC).

Dr Jennifer Paxton supervised two students, Haniya Ramzan and Asim Saleem, on two different projects to help teach anatomy to the public at future events.

Haniya, an aspiring dentist, worked on a project focussed on teeth, using 3D printed models of healthy and decayed teeth to model disease. We even developed an activity to allow people to become a ‘Dentist for a Day’ by repairing a decayed tooth with a filling! Haniya did a great job of developing the kits and accompanying resources.

Asim focussed on developing anatomy-themed jigsaw puzzles, hand-made from clay. These were a great way to combine technology and 3D printing with simple, cost-effective materials and to introduce different anatomical parts to the public in a fun and engaging way.

Both students produced resources that we hope to integrate into public engagement events in the near future – well done!
